THE LAME OLYMPIAN

Watching the paralympians perform their amazing feats I am reminded of Hephaestus (Vulcan) the Greek God and master blacksmith, who was born 'shrivelled of foot.' In some myths he even made himself a wheelchair. His lameness didn't prevent him from getting married off to Aphrodite, otherwise known as Venus, the Goddess of Love herself. Virgil even claims that the god of love, Eros, was their offspring although he may have been adopted by the couple.

Sadly the marriage was not a success, but Hephaestus went on to have a rich and colourful love-life with various nymphs and mortals.
